Save Money, Save Energy the Old-fashioned Way

Most people are looking for ways to take better care of the planet. Just look at the trash cans lined up on your street; many are recycling bins that families have carefully and selectively filled. If you are looking for ways to be better stewards of the Earth but don’t want to drive an electric car or invest in photovoltaic energy systems, there are lots of things you can do.

Keep It Simple

Do you bag up your grass clippings, throw out your kitchen waste, and then drive to the home improvement center and load up on great soil for your garden?  You can have all of that lovely soil without spending a penny by composting your clippings, leaves, and kitchen waste. By incorporating this simple operation you have saved money (put it into your savings account!), cut down on the use of landfills, and improved the soil. Other easy ways to save energy and resources include turning lights off when you don’t need them and foregoing that running stream of water every time your brush your teeth; the list is long.

Composting Sounds Like Fun, But How?

Composting is fun. Many people do not compost because they believe it will make their yard unsightly and because they have heard that compost heaps smell awful.  Done incorrectly, both concerns are valid. Done correctly, you will be amazed and your neighbors will beg you to help them try one out, too.

A compost heap needs air and the right mix of ingredients. Layer you compost heap like lasagna; with a layer of brown, then green, then kitchen waste.  Be sure to aerate or turn your pile frequently. Maintaining the proper level of moisture is important. A successful compost pile uses biological action to decompose the material and all living things need water.

Choose a great container and have fun creating great soil with recycled materials. Your flowers, shrubs, and trees will thank you.
