When to Go Green: Saving Money

One of the greatest benefits of going green is that it allows you to save some green at the same time. If you are caught amidst the “going green” debate and are not sure whether or not it is the right choice for you, then consider this: There are simple steps that you can take today and every day to reduce your own personal environmental impact while saving yourself money in the process.

1. When you save energy, you are saving money. Installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, setting your thermostat lower during the winter or higher during the summer, unplugging appliances and electronics when not in use and using cold water in place of hot as often as you can are all smart choices. Not only are you reducing your energy expenditures throughout the year to reduce your impact on the environment, but you are translating small actions into large savings for yourself as well.

2. When you save water, you are also saving money. Taking shorter showers, installing low-flow shower heads, using faucet aerators, installing low-flow or dual-flush toilet systems and planting native plants that are drought tolerant are all smart ideas. Cutting down on your water expenditure throughout the year will save you money on your bill while reducing how you impact the environment all around you.

3. Use less gasoline to keep money in your pocket, promote health and reduce your carbon footprint. Rather than driving everywhere, consider walking or biking to work or school. This will save you gas money and parking costs and will improve your health. If you must find another form of transportation, consider carpooling or public transportation, or even telecommuting to cut down on your gas use and the emissions from your car.

Small steps and changes can add up in a big way when it comes to saving money and benefiting the environment and there is no reason not to start “going green” beginning today.
